A background check will first and foremost tell you if the individual you’re looking to employ has a history that you should be wary of—such as arrests and other criminal troubles—but more than that, it’s also a gateway into any information that might give you insight into their character.
Now, background checks aren’t only reserved for those people seeking employment—those people looking for housing will have to go through this as well. Landlords want to make sure they’re renting to someone who will pay their rent on time and in full, as well as someone who won’t trash their property and make things difficult for them.
Now, there’s a whole lot more to background checks than just letting you know if someone has legal trouble. From a good, comprehensive background check you can discern if a person has any outstanding debt, what their residence history was and if they have a consistent history overall. This can give incredible insight into someone’s life. For example, which of the following tenants would you rent to:
- Tenant A, who has lived in five cities in the last three years, has filed for bankruptcy once a few years ago and who has several misdemeanor charges on their record.
- Tenant B, who has lived in two cities in the past year, has never filed for any sort of bankruptcy or debt relief, and who has a clean record.
Even if someone doesn’t give you all of the facts about themselves, you can still get the information you need to know through a background check!
